Rounded lithics in the fallout deposits of the 2360 B.P. eruption of Mount Meager, British Columbia: implications for conduit dynamics.

Prior to her arrival at UBC, Michelle’s research experience focused mainly on the geochemistry of explosive silicic systems, as well as the isotopic characteristics of the sulfur associated with these systems. Her MSc research, started in September 2010, will instead encompass the physical and experimental sides of volcanology. The focus of her MSc thesis will be on the physical characteristics of some of the lithic clasts associated with the latest eruption of Mount Meager volcano, in SW British Columbia; some of these lithics attained highly rounded, polished appearances prior to deposition, characteristics which are likely due to mechanical milling processes operating within the volcanic conduit and eruption column. Their analysis could provide new insights into the processes that occur during volcanic eruptions. Michelle is funded in part by a FQRNT Masters Research Scholarship.
